The Lantern Café will be opening (in term times) on a Thursday morning from today thanks to support from students at Walton Leigh School.
Whiteley Homes Trust (WHT) Volunteer Coordinator, Lilian Meagher has been working hard behind the scenes with the school which provides education for young people with learning disabilities. The partnership with our charity will help the young people develop important skills and give them useful work experience which will enable them to find work.
Lilian said: “I’m so delighted we have managed to make this happen as there are huge benefits for everyone involved. The café is such an important place for residents and their friends and families to meet and it’s wonderful being able to have it open more often.
“Our young volunteers always bring such enthusiasm and energy to their work which residents really appreciate. Obviously, these students will be learning, so we hope people will be patient with them, but we’ve had a very positive response from everyone so far.“
Walton Leigh teacher, Madeleine Bicknell said: “Volunteering at Whiteley Village is a great opportunity for our students to do something to help other people and to use some of the skills they have learnt at school.
“For the students, it is an opportunity to work on skills which will prepare them for adulthood and possible future employment. They will be involved with the
wider local community and the experience will improve their confidence and sense of achievement and pride.”
